Mayumi was born and raised in Kumamoto, Japan and began her career creating wigs for the Takarazuka Musical Show while working at Fan Fan Hair Salon. She went on to travel throughout Germany, Italy and Switzerland touring various salons, further developing her craft. Mayumi moved to England and enrolled in the Pierre Alexander Academy in Manchester City for six months.
She returned back to Japan working as a stylist at the Alex Hair Salon in Kobe, Japan. Eager to learn from new and innovative stylists, Mayumi moved to New York City and joined the John Sahag Workshop as an apprentice in the late eighties. John not only taught Mayumi his signature dry cutting technique and styling methods, hair but also that nothing was impossible. He challenged her everyday. Mayumi's respect, passion and dedication for John continues and can be viewed in through her work and her loyal client base.
Mayumi has styled for various magazines such as Vogue, Elle, W Magazine, New York Magazine and InStyle just to name a few. Mayumi's work has also been seen in fashion shows including Diane Von Furstenberg, Betsey Johnson, Escada, Cynthia Rowley, Randolph Duke, Necessary Objects, as well as for Disney projects. Mayumi conducts seminars both at John Sahag and at the International Beauty Show to teach and inspire new and upcoming stylists.
